Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 2026

Voltcheckr is a free tool that helps Texans compare electricity plans. We take your privacy seriously. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

What we collect

When you upload a bill, we extract: provider name, billing period, usage in kWh, total charged, effective rate, ZIP code, and your ESI ID (if present). We do not extract or store your name, account number, physical address, phone number, or any payment information.

When you enter your ZIP and home size manually, we store only those two values plus the plans we showed you.

We also record standard analytics events: page views, button clicks, session IDs, approximate location (from ZIP), browser + device type, and referral source. No personally identifying information is attached.

Your bill file

Your uploaded bill is used only to prepare your quote. When you upload a bill for instant analysis, the file is deleted from our storage within 60 seconds of a successful analysis — only the anonymized usage figures needed to rank plans are kept. Access is limited to Voltcheckr. We never sell or share your bill with third parties. You can request deletion at any time by emailing privacy@voltcheckr.com, see "Your rights" below.

How we use your data

We use the extracted numbers to rank Texas electricity plans against your actual usage and show you savings. We use anonymized analytics events to improve the product. We never sell personally identifying information.

When you click "Switch" on a plan, we forward you to the provider's signup page. We earn a referral commission if you complete the switch. The provider then handles your account directly, we are not part of the transaction.

Anonymized aggregate data

Voltcheckr publishes and licenses anonymized aggregate statistics derived from the numbers on bills that users upload. These aggregates contain no personally identifying information, we report data at the 3-digit ZIP prefix level (never full ZIP), hash provider names where appropriate, and only include statistics in groupings large enough that no individual household can be re-identified.

Example aggregate statistics we may publish or license: "the average effective rate paid by users in ZIP3 770 was 14.2¢/kWh in March 2026," "87% of Houston users on a variable rate are overpaying by $20+/month," or "the top 5 cheapest plans in Oncor territory this week." These aggregates may appear in our blog, weekly newsletter, research datasets, public API, journalism, academic papers, and commercial data licenses.

By uploading a bill to Voltcheckr, you consent to the use of your bill data in anonymized aggregate form for the purposes above. You can opt out at any time by deleting your data (see "Your rights" below), any aggregate statistics published before your deletion request remain as previously published, but none of your data will be used in future aggregates.

Texas residents: your TDPSA rights

Under the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act (TDPSA), Texas residents have the right to: (a) confirm whether we're processing your data, (b) access that data, (c) correct it, (d) delete it, (e) obtain a portable copy, and (f) opt out of its sale or use for targeted advertising. Voltcheckr does not sell personal data or use it for targeted advertising, but the other rights still apply.

Third parties

We use a licensed Texas energy supplier rate service as our source of live plan rates. We use OpenAI's GPT-4o to extract structured data from uploaded bill files. We use Vercel for hosting and analytics, and Supabase for our database. We use Rewardful for affiliate tracking.

Your rights

You can request deletion of any data we have about you by emailing us. We'll honor the request within 45 days, as allowed under the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act.
