How the counts are made

Voltcheckr LLC reads five public feeds nightly (Texas Comptroller sales tax, mixed beverage and tobacco permits, TABC applications and licenses, and city and county building permits), keeps the filings that describe a business opening or fitting out a commercial premises, drops home-based registrations and businesses public listings already show as operating, matches each filing to a Texas city page, and counts by NAICS sector. Nothing but a city, a sector and a count is stored or published.

Questions about these counts

What counts as a new business filing?

A public record that says a business is opening or fitting out a commercial premises: a new sales tax permit with a future or recent first-sales date, a pending or newly issued TABC license, a mixed beverage or tobacco permit, or a fit-out or certificate-of-occupancy permit. Maintenance permits, home-based registrations and filings by businesses that public listings already show as operating are left out.

Why does a broker publish this?

Because a new business needs an electricity account, and in deregulated Texas territory it chooses its supplier. The counts say where the market is moving month to month, city by city, and the same public records are what Voltcheckr LLC reads to find businesses opening near its clients. No business is named here; the counts are the whole dataset.

Can I reuse the numbers?

Yes, with attribution to Voltcheckr LLC and a link to this page. The counts are Voltcheckr LLC's own derivation from public records; the Texas Comptroller, the TABC and the permit offices publish the underlying filings and are not the source of these totals.
